Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
