They're Applying to America What They Executed with Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the US president started showing everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to build it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically not the account of a powerful ruler arising; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.

The apparent and direct reality that the Savior in biblical accounts calls for a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Among Us

So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump arise in this past year. It has been great solace to help build the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the finest aspects of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply feigning the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both humility and faith, a blend that committed national faithful ought to accept.
