Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
