The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
